Last night, the doctors removed both the feeding and breathing tubes from Kevin’s mouth. He’s still on the ventilator, but he’s able to communicate more easily by mouthing words and whispering a little. It’s a lot easier to understand him now, which is really great.
We’ve always encouraged visitors, but now that Kevin is able to communicate more easily and won’t be recovering from procedures, this holiday weekend would be a good time to see him, we think. I guess we shouldn’t be surprised because it’s Kevin, but he’s in pretty good spirits and is already chatty.
We will let you know if anything changes, but if you’ve hesitated to visit, please feel free to come. Details for visiting are available on the “Visiting Kevin” tab above.
As a family, we are tremendously grateful for all of the support you have shown us over the past week and a half. And more than anything, we are really thankful to have Kevin with us this Thanksgiving.
We wish you all a safe and happy holiday!
I never met Kevin but after reading his story I couldn’t help but to keep up with his recovery progress. Glad to hear he is in good spirits, that’s awesome! Wishing your family a Happy Thanksgiving.

To the Neary Family,
On this Thanksgiving, I am so grateful that families like yours exist. The manner in which you have rallied around Kevin has been nothing short of astonishing. Faced with such a shocking, horrific event, you have chosen to remain strong and optimistic, and to focus your energy on loving and caring for Kevin. That along the way you have taken the time to express your gratitude – for Kevin’s survival and personality, for the police, and for the support of friends and the general public – has been the classiest and most awe-inspiring thing I’ve witnessed in a long time. Thank you, and may Kevin and all the souls of your family continue to heal.
Sending you warmest wishes this Thanksgiving. To be surrounded by such a warm family and supportive friends is truly a blessing. I am so incredibly thankful, more than words, that Kevin is on the path to recovery.
Much love, and thanks for the wonderful updates,
Kristen
Kevin was a integral part of our grace before Thanksgiving dinner this year. Although only a few members of our familiy met Kevin as part of a wedding celebration a few months back, in the short interaction with him he made a very positive impression. He remains in our thoughts and we contine to hope for a full recovery!
